Vitosha is the oldest Park in the Balkans. This is Bulgaria's highest ski resort, only 22 km far from Sofia.
Since the ancient times of the Thracians, a large population has always existed at the base of Vitosha. For the last four thousand years the economy of this large settlement has always been connected, in one way or another, with the neighboring mountain. The name “Vitosha” comes from the two-peaked, twin ridge mountain, which rises above the Sofia plain and has acquired its present shape in stages over many millennia.
In Vitosha resort you will find bright sun, powdery snow, wonderful ski runs and excellent hotels – and all of them are very close to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. You will have the opportunity to experience the dynamic cultural life of Sofia, to plunge into its history of thousands of years, to feel the pulse of its nightlife. The resort is situated very close to the capital of Bulgaria, on the Vitosha mountain, at 1,800 m above sea level, on the eastern slopes of Cherni Vrah (2,290 m), which is the highest Vitosha's peak. The moraine rock rivers are a typical Vitosha landscape. The Vitosha plateau became the firs national park in the country and in the Balkans in 1935. During the Middle Ages, some 14 monasteries were built at the foot of Vitosha and the nearby mountains of Plana, Liulin, and Lozenska Planina. The monasteries became known as Mala Sveta Gora (Minor Mount Athos). Many of these peaceful monasteries can be easily visited, and some offer overnight accommodations for guests.
